Number filters: greater than and between

A filter that keeps only the rows where a number meets a condition, such as greater than a value or between two values. The other rows are hidden, not deleted.

Understanding Number filters: greater than and between in ACARA Digital Technologies Years 7–8

What it does: Scoring more than a value means using Greater Than on the Maths column with 90 as the limit. A price range with a lower and an upper limit needs the Between filter with both values entered. Between keeps every number inside a range. Equals would only keep rows that are exactly 20. Filters only hide rows. Clear the filter and all the rows come back. A column of numbers shows a Number Filters menu. Text Filters appears for columns of words. 25 is greater than 10, so the Calculator stays. 1.50 is not greater than 10, so the Pencil is hidden.

Common mistakes: Marks are numbers, so the menu to use is Number Filters. Text Filters only appears for text columns. The line should be 'Number Filters > Greater Than'. Top 10 keeps the highest few items, not a range of values. To keep marks from 60 to 80, pick 'Number Filters > Between'.

Quick Questions

1. You want to keep only students with a Maths mark above 80. Which Number Filter condition do you choose?
A. Greater Than... 80 ✓
B. Less Than... 80
Greater Than keeps rows where the number is bigger than the value you type. Less Than would keep the low marks instead.
2. You want only days with a Max temperature from 20 to 25. Which Number Filter fits best?
A. Between... 20 and 25 ✓
B. Equals... 20
Between keeps every number inside a range. Equals would only keep rows that are exactly 20.
3. After you apply a Number Filter, what happens to the rows that do not meet the condition?
A. They are deleted forever
B. They are hidden but still in the sheet ✓
Filters only hide rows. Clear the filter and all the rows come back.
4. Which menu option lets you filter a column of numbers by a condition like Greater Than?
A. Text Filters
B. Number Filters ✓
A column of numbers shows a Number Filters menu. Text Filters appears for columns of words.
5. A shop sheet has Price in column C. You filter Price with Greater Than 10. Which item stays visible?
A. Calculator at $25 ✓
B. Pencil at $1.50
25 is greater than 10, so the Calculator stays. 1.50 is not greater than 10, so the Pencil is hidden.

Match the Pairs

Number Filters > Greater Than... 80 → Shows only the rows where the number is above 80 and hides the rest
Number Filters > Between... 60 and 80 → Shows only the rows where the number falls from 60 up to 80
Find every student who scored more than 90 in Maths → Maths column > Number Filters > Greater Than... 90
Show only items that cost from $10 to $30 → Price column > Number Filters > Between... 10 and 30
Filter Maths column > Greater Than... 80 and then press Delete on the visible rows to tidy up → Deleting the visible rows after filtering removes real data, but a filter should only hide rows, not delete them
Number Filters > Between... 80 and 60 → The lower value should come first, so the limits are in the wrong order and the range makes no sense

Spot the Error

Question 1
A Click a cell in the table
B Turn on Filter in Data tab
C Text Filters > Greater Than
D Type 80 and click OK
Line C — Marks are numbers, so the menu to use is Number Filters. Text Filters only appears for text columns. The line should be 'Number Filters > Greater Than'.
Question 2
A Filter the Maths column (B)
B Pick Number Filters > Top 10
C From 60 to 80, then click OK
Line B — Top 10 keeps the highest few items, not a range of values. To keep marks from 60 to 80, pick 'Number Filters > Between'.
Question 3
A Goal: days with Max above 25
B Open Number Filters on Max
C Choose Less Than, enter 25
Line C — Less Than keeps days below 25, but the goal is days above 25. The line should be 'Choose Greater Than, enter 25'.
Question 4
A Goal: the 3 highest marks
B Number Filters > Between
C Set Top, 3, Items, then OK
Line B — Between needs a low and a high value and does not pick the highest rows. To get the 3 highest marks, use 'Number Filters > Top 10'.
Question 5
A Check: =COUNTIF(C2:C9,>10)
B Number Filters > Greater Than
C Enter 10 in the box, click OK
Line A — The condition in COUNTIF must be inside quotes. It should be =COUNTIF(C2:C9,">10") so it can be used to check the filtered row count.
