Modelling an event as a record

One occurrence of an event stored as a single row, where each attribute of the event, such as Date, Winner or Time, becomes a field.

Understanding Modelling an event as a record in ACARA Digital Technologies Years 7–8

What it does: Date, Event, Winner and Time are attributes of a race, and each one is declared as a field with its own data type. One occurrence of an event is one record. The attributes of the event become the fields. A record holds the values for one event. The list of field names is the table structure. A date field stores calendar dates and sorts them correctly. A Boolean field only holds true or false. 13.4 has a decimal part, so it needs a floating point number. An integer would lose the .4. The fix is to put the 100m race on one row and the Relay race on a second row, so each row is one race.

Common mistakes: Each field in the table needs a comma after it, except the last one. The Event field should be written as ' Event TEXT,'. The keyword is VALUES, not VALUE. It adds one record (one race) to the Races table.

Quick Questions

1. A school swimming carnival race is an event. How should one race be stored in a Races table?
A. As one record (one row) ✓
B. As one field (one column)
One occurrence of an event is one record. The attributes of the event become the fields.
2. Which of these is an attribute of a race event that becomes a field in a Races table?
A. Race number 3 on 5 May
B. Winner ✓
Winner is an attribute, so it becomes a field. 'Race number 3 on 5 May' is a whole occurrence, which is a record.
3. A Races table has the fields Date, Event, Winner and Time. Which one is a record?
A. Date, Event, Winner, Time
B. 2025-05-12, 100m Sprint, Ava, 13.4 ✓
A record holds the values for one event. The list of field names is the table structure.
4. Two different races are held on the same day. How many records do they need?
A. Two records, one for each race ✓
B. One record, because the date is the same
Each occurrence of an event gets its own row, even when some values such as the date match.
5. Which field is the best choice to store when the race happened?
A. Date, using a date field ✓
B. Date, using a Boolean field
A date field stores calendar dates and sorts them correctly. A Boolean field only holds true or false.

Match the Pairs

Races(Date, Event, Winner, Time) → A table design where each attribute of a race event becomes a field
2026-03-14, 100m Sprint, Mia, 12.4 → One record that stores a single occurrence of a race event
Each attribute of an event becomes a field in the table → CREATE TABLE Races (Date TEXT, Event TEXT, Winner TEXT, Time REAL);
Each occurrence of the event is stored as one row, so a second race is a second record → INSERT INTO Races VALUES ('2026-03-21', 'Relay', 'Leo', 48.9);
Races(Date, Event, Winner, Time) 2026-03-14, 100m, 2026-03-21, Relay, Mia, Leo, 12.4, 48.9 → Two races are squashed into one record. Each occurrence of the event needs its own row.
Races(Winner, Mia, Leo, Zoe) → The winners' names are used as fields. The field should be the attribute Winner, and each name is a value in a record.

Key Term

event record
One occurrence of an event stored as a single row, where each attribute of the event, such as Date, Winner or Time, becomes a field.

Fill in the Blanks

1. CREATE TABLE Races (Date TEXT, Event TEXT, Winner TEXT, Time REAL);
Hint: Type the table name that will hold one row for each race event.
2. SELECT Winner, Time FROM Races;
Hint: Type the field that stores who won the race.
3. SELECT * FROM Races ORDER BY Time;
Hint: Type the field that stores how long the race took, so the fastest results come first.
4. SELECT COUNT(*) FROM Races;
Hint: Type the function that counts how many records, or race occurrences, are stored in the table.
5. INSERT INTO Races VALUES ('2026-03-01', '100m', 'Ava', 12.4);
Hint: Type the keyword that introduces the data for one new record, one value per field.

Spot the Error

Question 1
A CREATE TABLE Races (
B Date DATE,
C Event TEXT
D Winner TEXT,
E Time REAL
F );
Line C — Each field in the table needs a comma after it, except the last one. The Event field should be written as ' Event TEXT,'.
Question 2
A INSERT INTO Races
B VALUE ('2026-03-04', '100m',
C 'Ava', 12.4);
Line B — The keyword is VALUES, not VALUE. It adds one record (one race) to the Races table.
Question 3
A SELECT Date, Event, Winner
B FROM Races
C WHERE Event = '100m'
D ORDER BY Times;
Line D — The Races table has a field called Time, not Times. You can only sort by a field that exists. It should be 'ORDER BY Time;'.
Question 4
A CREATE Races TABLE (
B Event TEXT,
C Winner TEXT,
D Time REAL
E );
Line A — The words are in the wrong order. The correct start is CREATE TABLE Races (, with the table name after TABLE.
Question 5
A INSERT INTO Races
B VALUES ('2026-03-11', 'Relay',
C 'Blue House');
Line C — The record has only 3 values but the table has 4 fields (Date, Event, Winner, Time). The Time value is missing. It should be 'Blue House', 48.9);
