Digital reputation

The impression other people form of you from the data in your digital footprint, such as posts, photos and comments that show up when someone searches your name.

Understanding Digital reputation in ACARA Digital Technologies Years 7–8

What it does: The search returns footprint data, and that data shapes the impression the employer or school forms of you. Different items in your footprint create different impressions, so each post adds to your reputation. Digital reputation is about the impression people form from the data they can find about you, not just follower counts. Searching your name shows posts, photos and comments that others can use to judge you. Employers and schools often look at public footprints to form an impression of a person. People judge data differently. A joke photo may seem funny to friends but unprofessional to an employer.

Common mistakes: The variable is called name, so nam does not exist. Searching your own name needs SEARCH(name). Bad posts are the total posts minus the good posts. Adding them gives the wrong number. It should be posts - good.

Spot the Error

Question 1
A SET name ← "Sam Lee"
B SET results ← SEARCH(nam)
C DISPLAY results
Line B — The variable is called name, so nam does not exist. Searching your own name needs SEARCH(name).
Question 2
A SET posts ← 5
B SET good ← 4
C SET bad ← posts + good
D DISPLAY bad
Line C — Bad posts are the total posts minus the good posts. Adding them gives the wrong number. It should be posts - good.
Question 3
A IF post = "rude comment"
B SET impression ← "bad"
C ENDIF
Line A — An IF line must end with THEN. Without it the program does not know where the rule starts. It should be IF post = "rude comment" THEN.
Question 4
A SET post ← "won the trophy"
B IF post ← "won the trophy" THEN
C SET impression ← "good"
D ENDIF
Line B — The arrow ← stores a value, but an IF needs to compare two values. It should use = to check the post, not store into it.
Question 5
A SET viewer ← "employer"
B IF viewer = employer THEN
C DISPLAY "checks footprint"
D ENDIF
Line B — The text "employer" must be in quotes. Without quotes the program looks for a variable called employer. It should be IF viewer = "employer" THEN.
