Describing a trend in a sentence with evidence
A trend statement says what changed, which way it went and the numbers that show it, plus a limit or reason such as 'because' or 'might'.
Understanding Describing a trend in a sentence with evidence in ACARA Digital Technologies Years 7–8
What it does: The word 'because' links the prediction to evidence from the data, and 'might' shows it is not certain. The numbers 40 and 65 show how much the data changed over time, which makes the statement clear and checkable. The Week 4 value of 20 does not fit the pattern. A good trend statement points out the outlier and gives its number. The first sentence names a direction but gives no numbers. Adding 'from 19 to 31' gives evidence that others can check.
Common mistakes: The numbers go up from 40 to 65, so the direction word must be 'rose', not 'fell'. It should read: Sales rose from 40 to 65. The numbers in a trend statement must match the data. The last value is 65, not 55. It should read: Sales rose from 40 to 65.
