IGCSE Computer Science Paper 1 · Modules 490–499 · Student wording will vary for definitions
persistent cookie — A cookie saved on the device until its expiry date or until the user deletes it, so it stays after the browser closes and is sent again on later visits.
session vs persistent cookie — A session cookie is deleted when the browser closes; a persistent cookie is kept on the device until it expires. Cookies are text data, not programs.
cookie personal details — A cookie can save personal details like your name or address, so forms are autofilled and you are greeted by name on later visits. A persistent cookie suits this.
preference cookie — A cookie that records a user's preferences and browsing habits so a site can tailor what it shows, such as language, layout, suggested products or targeted adverts.
shopping cart cookie — A cookie that remembers which items a user has added to an online shopping cart, so the cart is not emptied as they move between pages. It can last one visit or be kept for later.
login cookie — A small file a website saves in your browser to remember you are logged in, so you do not have to type your username and password on every page.
session or persistent — Decide how long a cookie must last: session if it can go when the browser closes, persistent if it must last for later visits. Justify your choice with because.
full-mark answer — An exam answer that uses correct terms (URL, DNS, HTTP), gives each step in order and explains why, e.g. DNS finds the IP address so the browser knows which server to ask.
currency — The money a country or group uses to buy, sell and store value, such as the dollar or the pound.
physical money — Cash in the form of coins and notes that you can hold in your hand and hand over to pay for things, unlike digital currency, which exists only electronically.
