ACARA Digital Technologies Years 9–10 · Modules 255–329 · Student wording will vary for definitions
response validation — A rule set on an online form question, such as required, a number range or multiple choice instead of free text, that blocks bad answers so only valid data is collected.
logging interval — How often a sensor records a reading. Short intervals give more detail but bigger files; long intervals save space but can miss fast changes.
one row per reading — A sensor log stores each reading as its own row: a timestamp column for the date and time, then one column per measurement, with units in the header, such as Temp (C).
sensor error — A reading that is wrong due to a faulty or uncalibrated sensor or electrical noise, so check for stuck values, impossible spikes and offsets against a known value.
Indigenous data sovereignty — The right of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to own, control and decide how data about their communities is collected, used and shared, with consent and respect.
raw data copy — Keep the original data untouched on its own Raw sheet or file, then clean a copy on a Clean sheet, so any mistake can be undone. Version numbers like data_v2 and backups help.
=LEN(A2)=4 — LEN counts the characters in a cell, spaces included. Comparing it to a number, like =LEN(A2)=4 for a 4-digit postcode, gives TRUE if the length is right and FALSE if not.
format check — A validation check that tests a value follows an expected pattern, like two letters then three digits or a real date. A correct pattern does not prove the data is right.
=IF(AND(B2>=0,B2<=120),"OK","Check") — Shows OK if B2 is between 0 and 120, otherwise Check. Copy it down the column beside the data, then filter on Check to find the invalid entries.
Find and Replace — A spreadsheet tool that swaps every spelling variation of a category, such as Vic or VIC, for one agreed value like Victoria, so each category is counted only once.
