ACARA Digital Technologies Years 5–6 · Modules 85–104 · Student wording will vary for definitions
1"5" — Text, not a number. Quote marks turn the digit 5 into text, so 5 + 5 makes 10 but "5" and "5" joined make "55". Phone numbers are text too.
2data type — The kind of value you have. Look at what it is: a number to count or calculate with, text in quote marks, or an answer that is only true or false. A postcode is text, not a number.
3+ - * / — The four maths operators for numbers: + adds, - subtracts, * multiplies and / divides. Each one works on two numbers and gives back a new number as the answer.
4concatenation — Gluing two pieces of text end to end into one, so "sun" and "shine" make "sunshine". It joins text together; it does not add numbers, so "3" and "4" make "34".
57 > 3 — A comparison. Symbols like > (greater than), < (less than) and = (equal to) compare two values and give true or false. 7 > 3 is true, so a program can use it to decide.
6choose a data type — Ask what you will do with the value: calculate with it (number), join or show it (text), or answer yes/no (true/false). A phone number is text because you never add it.
7A computer stores a picture as numbers — Digital systems turn pictures, colours and text into numbers. Binary uses only 0 and 1, like off and on, and the data type decides what you can do with it.
8nested IF — A second IF written inside the THEN or ELSE path of the first IF. It is only checked when that path is taken. Indent it and give each IF its own END IF.
9AND / OR — AND is true only when both conditions are true. OR is true when at least one is true. Saturday AND sunny needs both; Saturday OR sunny needs just one.
